March 12, 2004, Newsletter Issue #116: Special Skincare Needs

Tip of the Week

Many of my clients are in need of addressing very specific skincare needs, such as dry, flakey skin, oily or blemish prone skin. The 6 essential steps still apply (cleanse, exfoliate, freshen, moisturize, protect, and drink water-hydrate). However, the products will differ. For dry skin it is necessary to use a formula that will not strip the skin of its natural oils. A gentle, creamy cleanser is best. It is also necessary to moisturize and hydrate the skin.

Normal to combination skin also requires a basic skincare regimen suited to the needs of creating and maintaining a moisture balance. Combination skin is characterized by oily areas in the “T” zone (the forehead, nose and chin). The key then is to cleanse and hydrate the skin using oil-free products so as to add and seal in moisture to the dry areas, while not over doing it in the oily areas. Blemish-prone skin requires a gentle deep cleansing. Many of my clients with blemish prone skin want a cleanser that “scrapes” the skin with harsh exfoliants. This actually aggravates the skin and can cause blemishes to bleed and possibly scar. Another myth is that oily skin needs no moisturizer. Oily skin, just like any other skin type needs to achieve a moisture balance. If you strip the skin of any and all its natural oils, the skin reacts by producing more oil. So, in reality, it is counter productive to completely dry out the skin. Mary Kay has several cleansers, moisturizers and masks especially for your individual needs.

Blemish Control
If you are like myself, you fall victim to those awful occasional breakouts. (You know…the pimple that could double as your 3rd eye!) Mary Kay has two products that I use daily to help control those occasional breakouts. These two products are non-drying and gentle enough to use every day, yet strong enough to fight those nasty pimples.

Dawn’s Picks and Personal Favorites:
Acne Treatment Gel…Love it!

Oil Mattifier…Love it! This product helps control the production of oil and can be reapplied throughout the day. Just blot the excess oil (using Mary Kay Beauty Blotters) and reapply the oil mattifier and shine no more.

Velocity
The Velocity Skincare, body care, fragrance and cosmetics line is great for teens and even preteens. (My 9 ½ year old daughter loves her very own cleansing products. I think it makes her feel grown up, but I know that it’s just good for her skin.) It deep cleans without drying, exfoliates and freshens. The moisturizer formula softens as it absorbs excess oil, making it suitable for blemish-prone skin. It has a nice fruity smell that really appeals to this age group.
