December 12, 2003, Newsletter Issue #103: 6 Simple Steps to Healthy Skin

Tip of the Week

6 Essential Steps Towards Healthy-Looking Skin:

1. Cleanse twice a day to remove makeup and impurities.

Apply your cleanser evenly over your entire face, avoiding eye area. Apply your cleanser in an upward and outward motion to lift skin. Avoid tugging or pulling your skin. Remove with a clean, warm, wet facial cloth. (Note: Use an oil-free eye makeup remover to cleanse the area around the eye.)

2. Exfoliate to remove dead surface cells that dull the skin.

Always use a gentle, non abrasive exfoliating product to avoid irritating the delicate skin on your face. Apply in an upward and outward motion. Remove with a clean, warm, wet facial cloth. Exfoliating will help to slough off dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin causing dullness.

3. Freshen to refine pores as well as tone the skin.

A gentle freshener should be used after cleansing or anytime as a mild astringent and facial stimulant for the skin. This will remove any vestige of cleanser, makeup or debris while gently freshening and toning the skin tissues.

4. Moisturize twice a day to hydrate the skin to help keep it soft and smooth.

Smooth your moisturizer over your entire face and throat using gentle upward and outward strokes. Once again avoid pulling or tugging on your skin. Even those of you with oily or combination skin should use an oil-free moisturizer. Remember, keeping your skin hydrated is different than replacing oils to the skin.

5. Protect your skin from the environment.

Use a product specially formulated for your face area with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or greater on a daily basis. This will help protect your skin from everyday, incidental sun exposure as well as give you necessary summer-time protection. Apply your sun protection product to your entire face, again in a upward and outward motion. The regular and liberal use of broad-spectrum sunscreen which shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, is the key to healthy skin. In fact, it is the cornerstone of every sound skin care regimen. While it is true that the burning UVA rays are strongest during mid-day, the UVB rays that cause the more insidious long-term breakdown of the skin are present in full force from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. It is, therefore, important to use sunscreen products during the entire year.

6. Drink plenty of water.

Eight glasses per day is the ideal amount. Dermatologists caution that results will not be seen overnight, but fine lines and wrinkles should start to become less visible over the course of several weeks.

Make Your New Year`s Resolution Early:
Following this regimen twice daily appears time consuming on paper. In reality, it takes less than 5 minutes to complete the first 5 steps-Cleanse, Exfoliate, Freshen, Moisturize and Protect. I am sure you will enjoy the benefits of healthy living and healthy habits. Six simple steps is all that stands between the old and the new you.
