March 26, 2004, Newsletter Issue #118: Skincare for Men

Tip of the Week

How do you describe your man? Rugged, brave, smart romantic at times. He puts in a hard days work, under the blazing sun or the chill of the winter. His hands are calloused, his face rough, and his eyes are weary at the end of the day. So, what man worries about his appearance, right?...Wrong! Men are actually just as concerned about their physical appearance as women. They just don`t admit that they think about skincare.

However, the skin on a man`s face varies little from that of a woman (aside from all the hair). Men are just as susceptible to skin damage caused by the sun and pollution. Most everyone is aware of the damage to the skin from the sun. But, what about the man who works in an office. He is safe, right?...Wrong! Pollution levels in many cities are high, coating the skin with a layer of grime as he waits to grab the next taxi. The dirt then finds its way into the pores, the body`s defense mechanism kicks in and more oil is produced, and breakouts occur.

Men and women alike should make facial cleansing a priority. For men, once a day is probably enough unless he`s a coal miner or auto mechanic. They may need to wash a little more. So, toss out those bars of soap. Soaps are alkaline which tend to dry out the skin. Use a lathering body wash instead. Even shampoo is gentler than soap for the body. For the face, use a facial wash in either a tube, bottle or bar. And by all means, men must use a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15, to protect themselves from the harsh rays of the sun. Anti-aging moisturizing formulas also usually contain antioxidants that protect the skin from free radicals that can damage the cell structure of the skin.

So, be kind your man, show him that proper skincare is a quick and easy process. Make caring for your skin a priority.
